There are changes to the NHS Pension scheme effective from 1 April 2008 where a tiered contribution scheme will be in place.
Our systems are already setup to incorporate these changes so if you no longer wish to administer the NHS Payroll and Pension, we are currently accepting new clients now. More details are in our comprehensive information pack.
The new contributions are shown on the table below:

Notes:
- Once a tiered rate has been determined it is applied to the whole amount. For example, someone with a pensionable pay of £150,000 will pay contributions of 8.5% x £150,000.
- Pence should be ignored when determining pensionable pay for the purpose of allocating members to tiers.
- Allocation will be based on full time equivalent pensionable pay during the previous financial year, with the exception of members currently classed as manual and paying 5%.
- Manual workers in tier 2 (£19,683 - £65,002) will retain their 5% contribution rate until 1st April 2009.
- For Officers with multiple contracts, FTE pensionable pay under each contract is considered separately and allocated a tier individually.
- The table used to allocate staff to bands will be updated by the Secretary of State from time to time.
- An updated table will be issued in 2008/9 once the AfC pay award is known. The updated table will be used for new starters starting after implementation of the AfC pay award.
- An individual’s contribution rate will not change in year:
- Officers moving from employment where they were contributing to the Officer’s scheme will retain the contribution rate to which they were allocated in the previous year of their employment.
- Officers moving from employment where they were contributing to the Officer’s scheme will retain the contribution rate to which they were allocated in the previous year of their employment.
- Officers who leave the Officer’s scheme and move to Practitioner posts will pay the contribution rate to which they were allocated for the year as Officers.
- Practitioners who leave the Practitioner’s scheme and move to Officer posts will pay the contribution rate to which they were allocated for the year as Practitioners.
- New starters in 2008/9 who are joining the pension scheme will be assessed based on estimated pensionable pay for 2008/9 using the contribution rates table in force at the time they join the scheme.
